Lungfish’s technology combines a number of novel and patented features to maximize safety and performance for the ultimate diving experience:

Carbon Dioxide Monitoring

Protects against Hypercapnia

Lungfish rebreathers are equipped with a robust CO2 monitor accurate to 0.01 KPa regardless of depth and background gas. This gives you a real-time indication of scrubber performance which will alert you to the presence of any CO2 well in advance of it becoming a risk.

The actual CO2 concentration of your inhaled gas is shown on the default dive screen, while separate alarms warn the user of a low level of CO2, indicating a functional though depleted scrubber, and a higher level that would necessitate bailout. You can easily make your own decisions as whether you want to purge the loop, reduce their exercise rate, carry on and finish the dive closed-circuit, or end the dive.

All CO2 readings are recorded along with the dive profile.

Failsafe Gas Addition

Protects against hypoxia

Our patented Hydrostatic Diluent Valve adds diluent in response to descent, not breathing. In moderate depths, this removes the risk of hypoxia from “breathing down” the loop. If for any reason the oxygen supply is interrupted, the action of the diver’s breathing will not cause the oxygen to be replaced with other (non-oxygen) diluent gases. Instead, you are alerted to the issue in advance of any danger, even without the action of the electronics, and allowed to take appropriate action or to bail out.

The same principle also allows us to offer a fully mechanical, demand responsive option – on our custom units. This can serve both as a stand-alone breathing system and as a belt-and-braces, fall-back option alongside electronic control.

Self Checking Electronics

Protects against Hyperoxia / Oxygen Toxicity

Lungfish’s electronics continuously monitor the readings of three oxygen sensors. Any faulty sensors are removed from the calculation of PPO2 and the diver is alerted. The electronics also monitor themselves for malfunction so any damaged parts are automatically isolated so function is not compromised.

Flood Resistant Scrubber

The design of our scrubber and counterlungs makes it difficult for water to get in, and easy for water produced by the scrubbing reaction to drain out. To prevent any risk of caustic materials from the scrubber reaching the diver or the electronics, we also use a water-resistant plastic filter which allows the passage of gas but not liquids and dust

Instantly Adjustable Counterlung Volume

A rebreather is safest and most comfortable to dive with if the volume of the breathing bags is similar to the movable volume of the diver’s lungs. Too small and the diver cannot take a full breath, too large and buoyancy control and maintenance of oxygen level are made more difficult.

Rather than offering different size counterlungs for different users, our systems are one-size-fits all: during setup, the diver breathes into them and then closes the casing, instantly adjusting them to the correct size.
